...and Now Luke is ONE

Friday, May 18, 2012
 My Dearest Luke,

My big ball of squishiness.
My wonderful, super duper angel.
The most perfect baby that ever lived.

I woke up today, picked you up from a warm slumber and held you close while I sang to you, the song my Grandpa Mario sang to us every year for 22 years. The song that means you are a year older, smarter, wiser, and more adorable.

Birthday's come but one a year
So I sing this message clear
Happy Birthday to you dear
Happy Birthday till next year

It's been simply an incredible year. Your arrival was different than the other 2 - I was so sad my last baby wasn't a girl.
But that's not your fault. Poor Daddy can't make girls.
And then you came.... and then you came.

Everything changed.
they say it will. and it does.
It did with the other two.

But this was different. This was YOU. You completed everything I didnt even know that I wanted. I had two perfect boys in Nicky and Luke and didnt know that what we were missing to our Abeling puzzle, was you, your magic, your sweetness - and boy have we been LUCKY.

You get the award for biggest Abeling boy. At your 1 year wellness check you were perfect.

You are 95% in weight (25.6 lbs), 95% in head circumference and 85% in height, 31 inches tall.

To compare, at 1 year Nicky was 25 pounds - 80th percentile, 30 inches - 75th percentile, and his head was in the 40th percentile; Brandon had the 45th percentile trifecta - weight, height, and head circumference. He clocked in at 23 pounds, 29.5 inches and your head is perfectly right below average - and thanks to his helmet, just P E R F E C T.

You have 14 teeth and the molars are coming in. You wear a size 6 shoe and wear a size 24 month in clothes. You are still the most perfect sleeper and I don't know what we did to get so lucky with you in that department.

You aren't talking too much, but you have said Ma, da, uh-oh and maybe bye. We will keep working on it. You can point, wave, and clap. You are super smart and know not to go down the stairs all by yourself. You eat everything we eat now, and tonight we get to throw away the bottles for good!!

As I have said before watching you grow up has become one of my greatest pleasures. You and your brothers bring me so much joy that its obvious why I am here. For You. For Nicky. For Brandon. Forever.

And I have to continue to thank you my dear dear friend for capturing a so many of your magical moments this year. Life is sweeter with Luke. And my life is truly sweeter with Tara in it.  You can relive the magical pictures and the emotional sideshow of your birth on Tara's Life is Sweet blog

And below are the pictures from his 1year old Cake Smash!

The Announcement on May 18th

I thought it would be fun to save this status update on Facebook.

Happy First Birthday, Brandon!

Today, my little baby is One.

....and now you are One

Tuesday, July 13, 2010
 Dearest Brandon,

It's probably not fair that I write you a letter on your birthday, and you have to share this with Nicky.  I sat down and contemplated how fast this year has gone. A year ago, you arrived tiny and small, and squishy. You stole my heart immediately. I wasn't able to hold Nicky until hours after I delivered him...with you, I saw your precious face within seconds. You looked nothing like Nicky, and somehow I wasn't prepared for that. Speaking of Nicky, your brother did not know what to make of you. He screamed pretty loudly the first time he saw you in my arms. Right away you had so many nick names, Banjo (the one I dreamt before you were born) Brando, BB, Baby B, and soon Brandy Boy.

You have proven to be easier than your brother, and even now, you are so happy. You always have the biggest smile. Most people say that you are such an easy baby, so smiley, so infectious. Little do they know that you have developed quite the temper, but we are lucky that you haven't started actual temper tantrums as early as Nicky did.

You are very vocal now, and have conquered Ma, Da, Hi, Yeah, Uh-oh, and mayyybe we got a Bye. I think I heard Apple too. You use all these sounds interchangeably and now that you are in the Young Toddlers class at school, I wonder how quickly your vocabulary will blossom. You started walking right at 11 months, and you won't let anyone stop you. And you are so quick toddling around like a drunk sailor! You love the stairs and are a climber. You want to be as high and as tall as you can. You are also so agile, and have great balance and coordination. You are very good at stacking and putting things into their holes/spots. Your attention span seems to be lengthier than Nicky's was - IS -  even to this day.

You have 12 teeth, and teething has been miserable for you, as bad as it was for Nicky. Your hair is a couple shades lighter, and as you fall to sleep, you lightly tug on your hair. This must comfort you - kind of like when Nicky takes the tags on his bays and puts them in his ear as he falls asleep. I love to watch you sleep. You have not become attached to any toys, blankets, or bays like Nicky, but you do love your nini.

Your eyes are a curious grey/blue/grey - and the shape is definitely mine. In fact you are pretty much my spittin' image.  Actually there are 2 camps that think you and Nicky look like me, or that you and Nicky look like Dan. It's just so strange to me that you guys look NOTHING alike, but at times so similar. Your features are so different, so special, so beautiful, so Dan and Me.

At your 1 year wellness check you got the 45th percentile trifecta - weight, height, and head circumference. You clocked in at 23 pounds, 29.5 inches and your head is perfectly right below average - and thanks to your helmet, just P E R F E C T.

To compare, at 1 year Nicky was 25 pounds - 80th percentile, 30 inches - 75th percentile, and his head was in the 40th percentile.

As I have said before watching you grow up has become one of my greatest pleasures. You and your brother bring me so much joy that its obvious why I am here. For You. For Nicky. Forever.

Below is the update I sent out right before Nicky's 1st Birthday.

Nicholas had a good weekend, 2 more weeks and he is 1 years old! I can't believe it. 4 more teeth are coming in - 2 top molars and 2 bottom molars for a total of 12 teeth and lots of long and miserable screaming fits. Honestly, no one tells you about the teething. Its just terrible and he doesn't handle pain very well - just like his mommy. Nicholas has also become prone to some tantrums recently. My favorite is when he throws his hands up and falls flat on the grown and lays there crying. I have to try not to laugh, its so cute. We went Strawberry picking this weekend at a farm about an hour away and he enjoyed the berries and mud. Nicholas met a horse for the first time and i can't wait until he is old enough for some lessons. Yesterday during our walk, we stopped and watched a flag football game with all these little boys. He was fascinated and I am pretty sure we may have a little Tom Brady in the making! (I'm hoping for early retirement :) ) Nicky now says momma, dadda, "gat" for cat "goud" for dog, and duck. I think we've heard nanna for banana and ne ne for something else, not sure yet.  Today was the second day in a row that he did not cry when I dropped him off at school and that made ME happy!

Party's Over

Tuesday, May 15, 2012
The triple boys Dino Party was this past weekend.

The red blow up T-Rex hitched a ride home...and then Nicky popped it with a Hammer when we got home. Lovely.

Thanks to grandmas Booba and Larissa, Papa Bob, auntie Val and auntie Shauna for your help. And to my Dan, for letting me do THIS for my boys, for me. Because I like to do it. Even completely unnecessary.

And thanks to my friends and the boys' friends who were here to celebrate and eat cake!

FOUR is Fantastic

Dear Nicky,

You're four now. Four years ago I saw your tiny little face for the first time and my life changed forever. for the good. Sometimes for the bad too, but those are all reasons why I love you more and more everyday.

We took you to your wellness check yesterday and you are as healthy and perfect as can be. You are incredibly shy. I think its been a gradual thing, but to me it feels like all of a sudden - and its curious. It's not like you have been sheltered or not around other people and kids. Heck, Ive been leaving you alone with people since you were 6 weeks old.  When you warm up, you are so charming, so funny, and such a great little actor. I see a future in acting.

At the wellness, they do the normal checks and balances....here are you current stats:
  • 44 pounds - 95th percentile! Again!
  • 43 inches tall  - 95th percentile - SO tall!!! Taller than a lot of the 5 and 6 year olds on the block.
  • Body Mass Index  - 85th percentile- apparently this is very good. ha.
You are in a size 4T/5T and wear a size 12/13 shoe. You have really big feet for a 4 year old. :) You got your first pair of Toms for your birthday and they are so cute.

Four also marked something remarkable - the change in mood and attitude - its pretty drastic. You were always such a sweet kid before, but you just seem calmer, more mature, helpful, thoughtful, nice to your brothers. You want to get dressed by yourself, and you like to make your own decisions.

You love to play with Luke and you are so good with Brandon.  You have some really good friends now: Colin, Tate, Grey, Aiden, Haylee, Ella, Jack E,  and Jackson. You miss Kylee Jo and ask for her often.

Your three year old letter is almost so similar, except your infatuation with Dinosaurs has overcome most of your other interested, however you still play with your monster trucks, army men, and play guns. You love to play angry brids on the iPad and watch "dinosaur vs. Monster Truck" videos on YouTube. WE finally have retired the gloves!! YES!

You like to dance - when no one is watching, and love to do your "gymnastic moves".

You light up the room with your amazing smile and your goofy expressions. You light up my heart everytime you crawl into my lap and give me one of our special bunny kisses.

Like i said last year I have spent 4 glorious years with you and I hope for 400 more. I love you, my Nickle Pickle. xoxoxo. I love you every day, every minute, every second. I love you to the moon and back.

Below are posts from Years 2 and 3.

Dear Three Year Old Nicky

Monday, May 16, 2011
Dear Nicky,

After two, you only have a wellness check every year on your birthday. So after a year of speculation, I picked you up on your 3rd birthday and walked across the street to Hill Country Pediatrics to find out how big my baby is getting. You were adamant about "no Boo Boos" at the Dr. (shots) I agreed.

No Boo Boos on your 3rd Birthday, my little man!

After being, weighed, measured, and your first blood pressure test, we waited for the Dr. to give us the results and fill us in on how you are doing. The results were surprising! You had a huge growth spurt and is in the 95% for weight (39 lbs) AND height (39 inches). Your BMI is 16% - or just perfect. Crazy that they check that now!

You are in a size 3T/4T and wear a size 10 shoe. They predict you to be 6'1 based on their little prediction chart, which is great!

On a developmental side, you are really excelling. You can identify most letters and can spell your name - (N-O-C-K-Y - you  insits there is no "I" in Nicky). You can spell stop and dog and you are very sharp, speak your mind, and is a total cheeseball.

Your passions right now are your continued love for latex and vinyl gloves, motorcycles, watching motorcycles on youtube, monster trucks, army men, and anything to do with water: water guns, water balloons, and squirt bottles. You love to run in the sprinklers and hose and is wet every afternoon.

Daddy lets you watch Hot Wheels and Transformers, which you think is so cool. You still love Dino Dan, Curious George and Calliou. I still want to poke my eyes out. You still love to watch Baby Einstein with Brandon, Shawn the Sheep, Timmy Time, and now sit still long enough to watch some movies at home: Bambi, Tangled, How to train your Dragon, and Ice Age.  On June 24th, we are going to take you to your first movie: cars 2. I can't wait.

For the most part, you are potty trained and sometimes at night. You can hold it for 8 - 10 hours, but I think when you wear a diaper to bed, you think you can pee in it. We will be working on that in the next couple of months..

You love the iPad, and spends hours playing games on it. Its pretty amazing how quick you pick up on new technologies and can adapt to these things! You can browse on YouTube and choose new games to play.

You have such a big heart too  - you love to hold hands, snuggle, and you tell me all the time that I am your best friend. But then again, you also tell Grandma Booba that ...and Miss Tiffany, Ella, Haylee, and Kylee Jo.  Either way, when you say that and slip your little hand into mine, I know that this is all worth it.

I've spent three glorious years getting to know you and I hope that I have 300 more. I love you every day, every minute, every second. I love you to the moon and back.

2 Year Wellness Check - Nicholas Abeling

Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Yesterday Nicholas had his 2 year check up and during the check up, we heard things like "persistent", "strong",  "demanding", and "gifted". We know most of this, but it was nice to get reassurance from the pediatrician and to realize we are not crazy, terrible parents, out of our minds, etc. We were also told to HOLD OFF the toddler bed due to his unpredictable sleeping habits*.

(*meaning, he won't go to sleep without screaming bloody murder,  unless we lay on the floor until he falls asleep. Last night I actually climbed in his crib and sang the "B" song and the new "Chuga Chuga Choo" song. Once he is alseep, he sleeps. Phew.)

Here are his current stats:
  • 31 pounds! (OH MY *big* boy!) - 85th percentile
  • 36 inches tall (although I think she measured wrong, so I will recheck this, and confirm) - 60th percentile
  • Body Mass Index  (whaaaat?) - 85th percentile
They don't measure the head anymore, but he still has a tinier head than Brandon. Or Brandon has a big head.
He got one vaccine, which resulted in a low grade fever today and him being sent home. (Thank you to our wonderful babysitter Lori, who picked him up from school today while we are at work! xo)

Our Dr. defined gifted as being able to use 3-4 word sentences, understand context and respond, articulate clear words, say his ABC's, count to 20, identify colors, say Buon Giorno (jk, i added that), use the potty  and TELL us that he has to go. He made up his first story yesterday (more on that later), and his imagination has kicked in. He is a comedian. He learns and says new words every day. He is pretty athletic and his calfs are developing into true Abeling/Fleming calves. He can catch a ball *sometimes* and has a pretty good arm. He loves to run and kick a soccer ball and is still obsessed with anything with Wheels

He really is pretty smart, I'm not kidding. I don't know what this means yet - we will be talking to the Pediatrician about what to do in the future to help challenge our little man retain and grow his knowledge as he gets closer to school age.

Until then, Nicholas, Mommy and Daddy are SO sososososososo proud of you, no matter what you do - GOOD or BAD. You (and Brandon) are the reason I became a Mommy.

{Enjoy 24 months of Nicholas...}

Peace

I'll be the first to tell you being a mom isn't easy. In fact, many days I thought I could keep driving and never look back. But three little men pull me out I my funk...and some really nice prescription pills. But I digress...this post could be all dark and dreary, but really it's about peace. I've found peace in a very unusual place. A place that would normally give me leg cramps from manual labor. Weeding. And it's pretty damn relaxing. And I think I look pretty serene in this picture. My new therapy. And it's free.
